Block Printing and Handmade Construction

Filling Spaces products use traditional Indian block printing — each pattern is hand-stamped onto fabric using carved wooden blocks, so no two pieces are exactly identical. The Gina, Manda, Marisa, and Vina pillow covers feature block-printed geometric and floral patterns on linen. The Fleur, Keya, and Ruby quilted coverlets use the same block-printing technique on cotton-linen fabric with hand-quilted stitching. This artisan process means slight variations in pattern alignment and color intensity are normal and part of the handmade character.

Product Categories

Throw pillows make up the largest category — available in lumbar (13x21, 16x26) and square (22x22) sizes, most as cover-only with zipper closure. The linen pillow covers (Anita, Inaya, Jameera, Maria, Mira, Padma) feature solid colors, floral prints, and ruffled or velvet-accent details. The block-print covers (Gina, Manda, Marisa, Vina) have bolder, more graphic patterns. Quilted coverlets (Fleur, Keya, Ruby) work as lightweight bedspreads or sofa throws. Linen napkins (Allyson, Jardin) bring the same handmade aesthetic to the dining table.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I care for block-printed textiles?

Dry clean or hand wash cold to best preserve the block-printed patterns. Machine washing on a gentle cold cycle is possible but may cause slight fading over time — wash inside-out and avoid bleach. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. The hand-applied dyes are set during production but are not as colorfast as machine-printed fabrics. Iron on medium heat on the reverse side if needed.

Are Filling Spaces pillow covers sold with inserts?

Most Filling Spaces pillow covers are sold as covers only — you choose and purchase the insert separately. This gives you control over fill type (down, poly, or down-alternative) and firmness. For a 22x22 cover, use a 22x22 or 24x24 insert (the larger insert creates a fuller look). For lumbar covers, match the insert size to the cover dimensions.

What makes handmade textiles different from machine-made?

Handmade textiles have subtle imperfections that are part of their value — slight variations in print alignment, color depth, and stitching. These variations mean your pillow or coverlet is unique. Machine-made textiles are uniform and consistent. Filling Spaces products take longer to produce and use traditional techniques that support artisan communities in India. The linen fabric also develops a softer hand-feel over time that machine-printed polyester does not.

Can I mix Filling Spaces pillows with other brands?

Yes. The natural linen base and earthy colorways (ruby, teal, indigo, olive, sand) pair well with other brands in our collection. A common combination: one or two Filling Spaces block-print pillows alongside solid Pom Pom at Home linen pillows and a textured Loloi woven pillow. The handmade character of Filling Spaces adds visual interest when mixed with more refined, machine-finished pieces.
