Floor Lamps

Floor lamps from Hudson Valley Lighting, Troy Lighting, and Mitzi. Aged brass, polished nickel, old bronze, and soft black finishes. Linen drum shades, glass globes, adjustable arc designs, and minimalist profiles for living rooms, reading corners, and bedrooms.

Floor Lamp Styles

Our floor lamp collection spans three categories. Task lamps feature adjustable heads or swing arms for directing light onto a reading chair or workspace. Ambient lamps use shaded designs (linen drum, frosted glass) to cast soft, diffused light that fills a room. Statement lamps serve as sculptural accents — taller profiles, distinctive silhouettes, and premium finishes that contribute to the room design whether the lamp is on or off. All 15 floor lamps are from the Hudson Valley Lighting Group (Hudson Valley, Troy, and Mitzi brands).

Placement and Sizing

Floor lamps typically stand 58-72 inches tall. For reading beside a chair, the bottom of the shade should be at seated eye level — approximately 40-42 inches from the floor. Place the lamp just behind and to the side of the chair so light falls over your shoulder onto the page or screen. For ambient room lighting, place the lamp in a corner where it can bounce light off two walls. Behind a sofa, a taller floor lamp (65+ inches) lights the seating area without the lamp being visible from the sofa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall should a floor lamp be next to a sofa?

The lamp should be taller than the sofa back — typically 58-64 inches for a standard sofa height. The bottom of the shade should sit above seated eye level so it does not shine directly into eyes. If the lamp is behind the sofa, taller is better (65+ inches). If it is beside the sofa at the arm, 58-62 inches works. Adjust based on your ceiling height — in rooms with 8-foot ceilings, avoid lamps over 68 inches that visually crowd the ceiling.

What type of bulb gives the warmest light?

Use bulbs rated 2700K for warm, inviting light similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. This color temperature complements aged brass and warm metal finishes. For a slightly brighter but still warm feel, 3000K works well. Avoid 4000K+ in living rooms and bedrooms — these cooler temperatures create a clinical feel and make warm metal finishes look off-tone. LED bulbs in the 2700K range are widely available and use a fraction of the energy.

Can I use a floor lamp as the only light in a room?

A single floor lamp with a large linen shade can serve as the primary light source in a small room (under 150 square feet) or as the primary ambient light in a larger room supplemented by task lighting (table lamps, sconces). For larger rooms, combine 2-3 light sources at different heights — a floor lamp for ambient, table lamps for task, and sconces or picture lights for accent — to create depth and avoid flat, single-source lighting.
