Counter Height vs. Bar Height
Counter stools are designed for 34-36 inch counter surfaces (standard kitchen islands and peninsula counters). Bar stools are taller, built for 40-42 inch bar-height tables and raised surfaces. Most of our Ethnicraft stools (Bok, Osso, N3, N4) are available in both counter and bar heights. When choosing, leave 10-12 inches between the top of the stool seat and the underside of the counter or table for comfortable legroom.
Ethnicraft Stool Collections
The Bok stool features a curved backrest and solid oak frame — available in natural oak and black-stained finishes, with an optional cognac leather seat. The Osso stool has a wider, more sculptural backrest in oak or teak with an optional leather seat pad. The N3 and N4 stools are minimal, compact designs ideal for smaller kitchens where space is tight. For outdoor use, the Jack bar stool is built from solid teak with weather-resistant construction — available with or without upholstered seat cushions in mocha, natural, or off-white fabric. Neville Fabrication offers the Bowie in solid oak and the Ophelia with a slipcovered seat.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many stools do I need for my kitchen island?
Allow 24-26 inches of counter space per stool. For a 6-foot (72-inch) island, three stools fit comfortably. For an 8-foot (96-inch) island, four stools work well. If your island has an overhang on one side only, count only that overhang length when calculating how many stools fit. Corner and L-shaped islands typically fit one fewer stool than the straight measurement suggests.
What is the difference between oak and teak stools?
Our Ethnicraft oak stools (Bok, Osso, N3, N4) are designed for indoor use — solid European oak with a matte varnish finish. Teak stools (Jack, Osso teak) are naturally weather-resistant and suited for both indoor and outdoor use. Teak develops a silver-grey patina when left outdoors unfinished, or retains its warm brown tone with annual teak oil application. Oak is lighter in weight; teak is denser and heavier.
Can I use outdoor bar stools indoors?
Yes. The Ethnicraft Jack teak bar stool works indoors — its clean design fits kitchens and dining areas. Teak is a premium hardwood that looks equally at home inside. The outdoor cushions are removable, so you can use the stool with or without them. The reverse is not true — indoor oak stools should not be used outdoors, as oak is not naturally weather-resistant.
Do the stools come assembled?
Most Ethnicraft stools ship partially assembled — the seat and backrest are pre-assembled, and you attach the legs. Assembly takes 15-20 minutes with the included hardware. Mercana and Dovetail stools vary by model — check individual product pages for assembly details. Neville Fabrication stools ship fully assembled.
