The Golden Rule: Add the Room Dimensions

The most widely used design formula is simple:

Room Width (in feet) + Room Length (in feet) = Ideal Chandelier Diameter (in inches)

For example:
If your room is 16 feet long and 14 feet wide:

16 + 14 = 30 inches

That means your ideal chandelier diameter is approximately 30 inches wide.

This formula creates visual balance and ensures your fixture feels intentional — not accidental.

For Living Rooms & Bedrooms

In open living areas, the chandelier should relate to the seating zone — not just the overall room size.

Center the fixture over the main furniture grouping.
If you have a defined rug, your chandelier should visually align with it.
In larger rooms, you can size up slightly for impact — especially with higher ceilings.

If you’re between two sizes, designers typically recommend going slightly larger rather than smaller. Undersized lighting is one of the most common mistakes in residential design.

Dining rooms follow a slightly different rule:

Your chandelier should be ½ to ⅔ the width of your dining table.

For example:

42" wide table → 21"–28" chandelier

Leave about 7 feet of clearance from the floor.
